IN THE BEGINNING…

In 1990 George Van Allen moved to Montrose and brought with him a passion for classic cars and trucks and a desire to form a car club.  The club would be for all makes and models and would also host an annual car show to benefit local charities.  On April 20,1996 the car club became reality as 25 auto aficionados met at River Bottom Park to sign up for what was to become the Black Canyon Classics Car Club.  The meeting was followed by a cruise to the local Dairy Queen.

The club started holding regular meetings to acquaint members with each other and to schedule picnics, cruises, parades, the annual car show and other events.  The club's initial officers were George Van Allen, President; Ed Douglas, Vice President; and Nancy Bright, Secretary/Treasurer.

Presently club meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month.  In April, 2007 the club began charging annual family dues of $10 per year. These dues are used to pay for the website, newsletter and other expenses of operating the club. Today the club officers, whose terms run from April 1st to March 31st, have grown from the initial 3 to 4.  They include Paul Martin, President; Kathi Huerta, Vice President; Jan Kinion, Secretary and Frank Kinion, Treasurer.

In addition, Coordinators are appointed to oversee specific club functions such as the Car Show, Carboys & Engines Newsletter, Historians, Public Relations / Events, Scholarship Fund and Web Master.

Presently the club has over 100 members.  The membership area includes Montrose, Olathe, Delta Ridgway, Ouray, Norwood, The West End, The North Fork Valley and Grand Junction.

The annual Colorful Colorado Car, Truck & Rod Show has grown to become a three day event.  Friday night is an impromptu downtown car show and cruise.  Saturday is the Main Event followed by a cruise in the evening to the Star Drive‑In Theatre.    Sunday concludes the festivities with a free continental breakfast and a surprise cruise to an undisclosed location.  Last July, 197 vehicles were registered in the show.  The proceeds from this event benefit local charitable organizations as well as a local scholarship fund.

Local organizations receiving show proceeds have been:

1996 - Partners;
1997 - Montrose County Historical Museum;
1998 - Mexican American Development Association;
1999 - Andy Mallett Museum;
2000 - Tri‑County Resource Center;
2001 - Gang Resistance Education And Training (GREAT)
             program in the Delta and Montrose schools;
2002 - The Montrose Senior Citizen Transportation group;
2003 - Community Dental Clinic;
2004 - Montrose Medical Mission;
2005 - Dolphin House Child Advocacy Center;
2006 - San Juan Healthcare Foundation supporting the San Juan Cancer Center;
2007 - Montrose County Historical Museum;
2008 - Montrose Medical Mission.

The Scholarship Fund, formed in 1999, is dedicated to helping high school graduates in the tri‑county area further their education in the automotive field.

The club's year round activities include Friday night cruises, participation in club events and other car shows and events as well as a club Holiday party.

So from its humblest beginnings in 1996 the Black Canyon Classics Car Club can be proud that it has given its members a reason to be out on the streets as well as a sense of civic pride for its continuing contributions to the community.
